What Is ADHD Coaching, and How Is It Different from Therapy?
Years ago, long before I trained as an ADHD coach, I hired a coach of my own. She changed my life.
Not with advice, but with questions. Over time, she helped me build a self-awareness I didn't have before. I started noticing the stories I was telling myself, the ones quietly holding me back. I'd catch myself arriving at a negative conclusion about a situation, and she'd ask: Is that really true? What evidence makes it true? Often, there wasn't any.
What made it work was consistency: time set aside, again and again, with someone whose only agenda was helping me uncover insights and make them actionable. It changed how I saw my work and difficult colleagues, how I approached my financial goals, and how I showed up with family and friends.
That's what coaching can do. ADHD coaching does it with a deep understanding of how the ADHD brain actually works.
What ADHD coaching is
ADHD coaching is a partnership focused on your present and future. Together we clarify what you want, figure out what's getting in the way, and build strategies that fit your brain, not a generic system designed for someone else's. Between sessions, you try things out. Next time, we look at what worked and adjust.
A coach brings structure, accountability, and an outside perspective. You bring the expertise on your own life.
How it differs from therapy
Therapy and coaching can both be valuable, and they do different jobs.
Therapy is health care. A licensed therapist can diagnose and treat conditions like anxiety, depression, or trauma, and often explores how the past shapes the present.
Coaching is not treatment. A coach doesn't diagnose. Coaching focuses on goals, action, and day-to-day follow-through: time, organization, activation, and the patterns that trip you up.
Many people benefit from both. Coaching can work alongside therapy or medication, and if something comes up that's better suited to a therapist, a good coach will tell you.
Who it's for
ADHD coaching can help if you:
know what you want to do but struggle to start or finish
have tried planners, apps, and systems that never stick
feel like you work twice as hard just to keep up
are tired of hearing "just try harder"
You don't need a formal diagnosis to explore whether coaching is a fit.
